Wildlife of Nepal

Nepal is an Asian country that is bordered by Tibet and India. In the lowland Tarai Valley are subtropical forests and there is snow and ice in the Himalayas. The country is home to eight of the tallest mountains in the world.

Official National Animal

Cows are the holiest animals and cannot be mistreated or killed. Tihar a three-day long festival celebrates cows.

Yaks are needed by the Nepali people for survival in the mountains, They provide milk, butter, and dung. The local sherpas rely on these animals to ride the treacherous trails of the high Himalayas.

Sagarmatha National Park is a UNESCO World Heritage site and includes Mount Everest.

Here you’ll find wildlife like the Himalayan tahr, goral, musk deer, and serow.

Bardia National Park is a protected area. This is home to rare, exotic animals like wild elephants, one-horned rhinos, blackbucks, swamp deer, gharial crocodiles, and the Ganges River dolphin. The park protects over 200 endangered bird species.

Rolwaling Valley Sanctuary is a protected area for yaks. Other wildlife include wild cows and sheep.

Shey Phoksundo National Park is the largest national park in Nepal. Phokosundo Lake has the highest waterfall in the country.

You can see snow leopards, Himalayas tahrs, and rhesus monkeys.

One-horned rhinos or Indian rhinos enjoy Chitwan National Park.

Asian elephants are the largest of all mammals in Nepal.

Royal Bengal tigers are the most charismatic and well-known of all big cats in Asia. They live in the jungle.

Snow leopards are found only in the mountains of central Asia and the Himalayas.

Red Pandas are found in the Eastern Himalayan range spending most of their time in the treetops.

Musk deer are interesting animals and live in Mustang and Manang ner the Annapurna Himalayas.

Blue sheep are among the most commonly seen wildlife in the Himalayas.

Indian leopards can be found in the national parks of Bardia and Chitwan.

Striped Hyenas can camouflage themselves well.

Pangolins are scaly ant and termite eaters.

Honey Badgers are found in burrowing in Denkhuri Valley.

Sloth Bears are found only in three countries Nepal, India, and Sri Lanka.

Marine Animals

Otters are small semi-aquatic mammals, They’re excellent swimmers. In Nepal, they can be found Terai, Rara region northwest, Annapurna Conservation Area, and outside of Pokhara.

Ganges River dolphins are blind, freshwater dolphins, They navigate the rivers of Asia.

Gharial crocodiles are interesting-looking freshwater river crocodiles.

Mugger crocodiles are among the biggest crocodile species and can only be found in southern Iran, Pakistan, Nepal, India, and Sri Lanka.
